Bitcoin’s break above $86,000 has cleared a major pocket of bearish leverage and put $90,000 back in traders’ sights.
The largest cryptocurrency climbed as high as $87,363 over the past 24 hours, its strongest level since January, before easing to $85,824 at press time, CryptoSlate data show. The advance pushed Bitcoin through a zone that had repeatedly capped rallies and accumulated short positions over several months.
Glassnode said the price action helped BTC reclaim all of its major long-term moving averages after spending about 300 days below them. The asset is also trading above its True Market Mean and short-term holder cost basis, levels the firm uses to distinguish sustained bullish regimes from weaker market structures.
On-chain activity accelerated alongside the move. Bitview data show more than 1 million BTC, worth over $92 billion, moved during the past week, the highest transaction volume in four years and above activity recorded around Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak.
The combination leaves the market entering its next test with much of the short exposure around $86,000 already flushed out, shifting attention toward whether fresh demand can carry Bitcoin through $90,000.
Leverage flips as shorts are cleared and longs rebuild
The speed of Bitcoin’s move through $86,000 reflected how heavily traders had leaned against the level.
Repeated failures between roughly $82,000 and $86,000 had encouraged investors to sell rallies and build short exposure around an area that increasingly looked like durable resistance. Once Bitcoin broke through, that positioning reversed from supply into forced demand as losing shorts were closed.

Alphractal Chief Executive Joao Wedson said the rally reached the largest short-liquidation zone built over the past year. The move followed an earlier washout of leveraged longs during Bitcoin’s decline, completing a broader reset in derivatives positioning.
That reset has now tilted risk the other way. Alphractal estimates longs account for about 71% of remaining unliquidated positions, compared with 29% for shorts, one of the widest gaps since Bitcoin’s October 2025 record high.
The shift means the leverage supporting the breakout is changing. Much of the short-covering that accelerated the move through $86,000 has already been spent, while exposure betting on further gains is beginning to rebuild.
Glassnode said long leverage is gradually returning in the options market as Bitcoin trades around $86,000, with open-interest put-call ratios moving higher. The firm said positioning remains well below the speculative extremes seen near Bitcoin’s previous peak, while perpetual-futures funding is still below neutral.
Broader derivatives activity is recovering more quickly. Santiment said aggregate crypto open interest rose 7.6% to about $156 billion even as bearish positions were being liquidated, while trading volume climbed 39%.
That combination suggests traders are replacing exposure soon after the squeeze rather than using the rally to step away from leverage altogether.
The distinction becomes more important as Bitcoin approaches $90,000. The move through $86,000 benefited from a large pool of traders being forced to buy back positions at rising prices.
With that mechanical demand diminished, the next leg will depend more on new buying and whether recently rebuilt long exposure can withstand a pullback.
Options positioning pushes the next test toward $90,000
The shift in leverage is being matched by a sharp turn in sentiment.
Blockchain analysis firm Santiment said bullish discussion around Bitcoin and the broader crypto market has reached its strongest level since 2024, while the Fear and Greed Index is approaching extreme greed following the breakout.
That optimism is increasingly visible in the options market. Deribit data show about $2.7 billion of Bitcoin open interest at the $90,000 strike, another $2.7 billion at $95,000 and roughly $2.3 billion at $100,000, putting about $7.7 billion of exposure across the three levels.
Bitcoin would need to gain less than 5% from its press-time price to reach $90,000, making that strike the market’s immediate reference point. Strike-level open interest includes both buyers and sellers, so the figures alone do not signal a directional bet. They do show where traders are concentrating risk after the short-heavy $86,000 zone was cleared.
That leaves the next advance dependent on a different mix of demand. The rally to $87,000 was amplified as traders were forced out of positions built on the assumption that resistance would hold. With much of that buying pressure exhausted, a sustained move through $90,000 will require fresh capital to absorb newly rebuilt leverage.
The setup therefore becomes more fragile as bullish sentiment rises alongside options exposure. Traders are no longer positioned around whether Bitcoin can escape the old range. They are increasingly positioning around how far the breakout can run.
